Yelena Voronina: «There is high demand for cloud services and IP networks among users, businesses and government»
The forum got underway with opening remarks by Andrei Kolesnikov from the Internet of Things Association who covered ten major trends of the Internet of Things in 2020 and how these trends project on the Russian digital economy.
Alexander Venedyukhin (INDATA Network Technology Development Foundation) presented findings of research into the distribution of internet services across autonomous Runet systems. He offered examples of how the operation of one website may depend on the condition of networks operated by different network operators.
The launch of DNS-over-HTTPS in popular browsers is changing the conventional stack of technologies for user access. Pavel Khramtsov (MSK-IX) presented a report on the market’s key stakeholders’ attitude towards DoH and experimental implementation of DoH into MSK-IX.
Ignas Bagdonas (Equinix) shared his company’s experience in network telemetry. BMP-based monitoring allows organizing prompt collection and analysis of BGP routes for optimizing connectivity and eliminating errors.
Andrei Leskin (Qrator Labs) spoke about the latest challenges in protecting network infrastructure and approaches to protection against DDoS-attacks in the context of various connection options for networks under attack.
Filiz Yilmaz, Product Manager at PeeringDB, updated participants on the development of a contact registry and an infrastructure for network and IXP owners. The registry will be useful for peering during the development of online networks.
Forum partners presented their solutions and technology at a technical seminar. Oleg Prokofyev (Juniper Networks) spoke about the Juniper Contrail Cloud platform for virtualization of network functions. Huawei System Architect Vladimir Gorenyshev presented this year’s releases and spoke about the major development trends for the company products targeting operators and cloud providers. Yevgeny Laptev (RCNTEC) spoke about the company’s device, RPCM Smart PDU that reduces idle time for IT infrastructure and applications.
The plenary session opened with remarks by MSK-IX General Director Yelena Voronina and Konstantin Chumachenko from NGENIX. The first part of their presentation was dedicated to the 15th anniversary of the forum and its important achievements and statistics. Since its establishment, the forum has had over 9,000 participants. Alexei Kolesnikov (IoT Association) was recognized as the most proactive guest speaker in the history of the forum. The champion among employees is Alexander Ilyin who spoke 17 times at 15 events.
Yelena Voronina and Konstantin Chumachenko focused in the second part of their presentation on the prospects of the internet industry and MSK-IX strategies. «There is high demand for cloud services and IP networks among users, businesses and the government. The speed and accessibility of cloud-based services are becoming a common courtesy and a key advantage for providers. Therefore, network connectivity is a key ingredient in all MSK-IX service platforms,» Yelena Voronina said. She also noted that MSK-IX plans to respond to the changes in traffic exchange point regulation by creating a service to this effect.
Chairman of the forum’s Program Committee Konstantin Chumachenko suggested looking back on the forum’s topics of the past 15 years: «Information security, mobile access, blocking and numerous other trends and events in the industry have been reflected in the program and been a subject of debates at the forum. This year, the forum opened with discussing the Internet of Things and is finishing up with the topic of cloud services and their impact on the internet. Our job is simple and complicated at the same time – we must be up to speed.»
Konstantin Chumachenko also thanked community representatives who proactively contributed to preparing the forum program.
The day continued with an MSK-IX section where the company’s top managers shared their news about the development of platforms and services.
MSK-IX Commercial Director Yevgeny Morozov announced that the company is launching a new platform, Instanet, to streamline connections between data processing centers. He also introduced new IX participants that include AWS, Twitch, Tattelecom, other global and Russian companies interested in peering via MSK-IX. Finally, he praised the most proactive partners of the company, including communications service providers and data processing centers.
MSK-IX Medialogistics Director Grigory Kuzin presented new services for generating and processing television signals on the MSK-IX platform. He also announced the launch of B2B delivery of television signals via its partner, Rostelecom, across Russia as well as via foreign operators.
MSK-IX Technical Director Alexander Ilyin spoke about updating the MSK-IX network core, automatization and API implementation on MSK-IX platforms. He also reported on the company’s technical team building development and quality control processes.
Every year, the peering forum invites representatives of foreign IXPs. Andreas Sturm spoke about the development of the DE-CIX peering network and the outcome of its partnership program with MSK-IX. Martin Eriksson (Netnod) spoke about the diversity of Netnod participants and announced that IX2IX and MSK-IX will sign an agreement in Q1 2020.
Arturo Servin (Google) shared the first results of applying the technical policy of verifying routing information of the peering partners interacting with AS15169 Google. The purpose of the policy is to increase the stability of the peering exchange.
The quality of legislation regulating the internet and telecommunications is directly affecting the prospects of the ICT industry. VimpelCom’s Sergei Malyanov made a presentation titled «The origin of these laws» in which he analyzed how legislative initiatives are generated and discussed. «If you don’t take care of laws, the laws will take care of you,» Sergei Malyanov noted in his address. «The expert community needs to get involved in the discussions on industry-specific bills. The scale and involvement of industry practitioners will draw the attention of the bill authors and help the former to be heard.»
The forum’s last session, «How cloud-based services are changing the internet,» was organized in collaboration with IKS Media. Dmitry Gorkavenko (IKS Consulting) presented a review of the strategies to cover Russia with a grid of data processing centers and cloud-based services. «Network delays are limiting the use of Moscow cloud platforms. For cloud services to operate in real time all over the country, we need a network of data processing centers. Our model allows identifying high-potential locations all over Russia,» Dmitry Gorkavenko explained.
Participants at a roundtable meeting moderated by Alexander Barskov (IKS Media) discussed optimizing connectivity with clouds, cloud solution development trends, integration of cloud technology with CDN, and the importance of network infrastructure and data processing centers for developing cloud services. The roundtable participants included Konstantin Anokhin (NGENIX), Oleg Koverznev (Yandex.Cloud), Alexander Kotov (Vodafone), Vadim Melnikov (TUTU.RU) and Yevgeny Morozov (MSK-IX). The participants concluded that the popularity of cloud services will grow further as operators, cloud providers and app developers form a single ecosystem.
