On May 24, the 27th Russian Internet Forum (RIF 2023) opened at the Lesnye Dali resort near Moscow. It was organized by the Association of Electronic Communications (RAEC) and the Digital Economy autonomous non-profit organization. For many years, the event has gathered representatives from IT companies, agencies, start-ups, and government officials, allowing them to share experience and best practices, as well as engage in networking.

MSK-IX CEO Yevgeny Morozov took part in the breakaway section on Runet infrastructure, import substitution and development trends in the domain market.

He talked about the principles of the DNS management system for Russian country-code domains and presented a new multifunctional OSS (Operation Support System).

The company manages a geographically distributed cloud of DNS servers with 23 points of presence around the world, which is used by ccTLD .RU and .РФ registries, TLD registries, government agencies, and companies.

To ensure maximum reliability and quality of services to DNS network clients, MSK-IX specialists have developed and implemented a special OSS. Its main function is to monitor DNS service and DNS servers for ccTLDs .RU, .РФ, and .SU.

Yevgeny Morozov described the reasons behind creating a special solution.
In theory, the availability of a service is counted as the ratio between the time a service becomes available to the time it should have been available in principle. In practice, everything is more difficult. The service can be unavailable to a client for a variety of reasons beyond the control of the DNS provider. Availability calculation methodology is an attempt to identify and consider these reasons along with the client.

The contractor must detect availability problems in a timely manner, and for this it must be warned about the occurrence of events that prevent it or about approaching an appropriate threshold beyond which the service is considered unavailable.

Monitoring not only the service, but also individual servers is associated with calculated reliability parameters, thus making it possible to control compliance with the assumptions made in the system’s design.

The equipment should be controlled and not just “heat the air” or sit there turned off on the rack. The DNS network node includes the DNS servers, of course, but it also includes a variety of software, on which the availability of the service depends, and which also needs to be monitored

“MSK-IX is systematically working to improve the reliability of its DNS network and the quality of services provided. The OSS we have designed not only makes it possible to solve the company’s internal tasks of monitoring the state of and maintaining the infrastructure, but it also increases interest as part of a comprehensive DNS+OSS solution from our clients: fixed-line and mobile operators,” Yevgeny Morozov explained.

This OSS developed by MSK-IX, has powerful functionality that allows the monitoring of 69 parameters of the service provided, of servers and of applications to ensure uninterrupted operation and a timely response to any incident. The functionality includes hardware and software inventory, SLA control and security with logging personnel and user actions, as well as role models with rights differentiation. The system helps guarantee high-quality and continuous service for MSK-IX DNS platform users.
